How to Get a Venmo Card in 10 Easy Steps

Did you know that there are almost 90 million US Venmo accounts? If you’re one of the many people using the platform, you may wonder about how to get a Venmo card.

The card makes it easy to use your Venmo balance outside of in-app transfers. Read on to learn how to get a new Venmo card and why you should do so.

1. Open Venmo

First, you’ll need to open the Venmo app on your phone. You may need to download the app and log into your account if you get a new phone or if you logged out for some reason.

2. View the Menu

Once you’re in your Venmo, account, go to the Me tab at the bottom of the app. Then, you can tap on the gear icon in the top right to open your settings.

If you have an older version, you’ll be able to access the menu from the homepage using the lines in the top left corner.

3. Select Venmo Card

In your settings, scroll until you find the Venmo card options. Depending on the version of Venmo, you may only have one option, but newer versions should give you the choice of a Venmo Debit Card or Venmo Credit Card.

They’ll work similarly to other debit and credit cards. The debit card will pull money from your Venmo balance, while you’ll need to pay back what you spend with a credit card.

4. Get the Venmo Card

Tap on the type of Venmo card you’d prefer. If you want the debit card, you’ll tap on Get the Venmo Debit Card. Then, you can go straight to the next step.

When you want to get a credit card, you’ll tap on Venmo Credit Card, then Get started. You’ll need to fill out an application, and they can deny you if your credit isn’t good enough.

5. Choose a Color

Since the credit card takes a while to process, we’ll assume you’re getting a debit card. After you select that option, you should be able to choose the color, including white, black, pink, blue, or purple.

Having this option is nice because you can use a unique color from any other cards you have. That way, you won’t mix up your Venmo MasterCard with another card in your wallet.

6. Add Your Legal Name

After you choose a color, Venmo will ask you to add your legal name. That way, they’ll know what name to put on the card, and you’ll be able to use it at retailers and online.

7. Confirm Other Details

Venmo will also ask you to enter the last four numbers in your social security number (SSN). The same screen has a space to enter your date of birth.

It asks for these details to confirm you’re who you say you are. That way, no one else can request a card in your name.

8. Enter Your Address

After that, you’ll need to enter your mailing address. Venmo will send the card there, so make sure it’s accurate and that it’s an address you’ll have access to so that you don’t miss the card.

9. Connect a Bank Account

Venmo will then ask you if you want to reload your card automatically if your balance gets low. If you enable that, it will pull $10 at a time from a bank account that you connect.

Tap on Add bank… and follow the prompts on your screen. Confirm the bank account number is correct before you continue.

10. Review the Details

Finally, you should see all of the information you entered to request the card. Go over everything to make sure you didn’t make any mistakes.

If there are errors, go back and fix them. But if everything looks good, you can tap Submit so that Venmo can start processing your request.

They’ll confirm your identity and create the card, and you should receive the card five to seven business days later.

Why Get a Venmo Card?

Knowing how to get a Venmo card is one thing. However, you may wonder if it’s worth getting a card from the payment app, especially if you already have a debit or credit card.

Use Your Balance

You can pay with your Venmo card at retailers or get cash from an ATM. It will work like any other debit card, and you can use your Venmo MasterCard balance rather than the balance of your traditional bank account.

If you get a lot of people paying you through Venmo, you may have a significant balance. As long as a retailer takes MasterCard, you can pay with your Venmo account and not have to transfer money to your bank.

That also means you won’t have to wait for the transfer to go through, which can take a day or so.

Get Cash Back

Another advantage of using a Venmo debit or credit card is that you can get cash back on certain purchases. One example is that you can get 5% back when you buy something using the card at Target.

If your other cards don’t come with those benefits, consider using your card from Venmo. Even if you have to pull money from your bank account, it could be worth the convenience and the savings.

Easy to Secure

When something happens to a traditional debit card, you have to call your bank and cancel the card. If you find the card soon after, you can’t typically re-activate it, so you have to wait for a new card in the mail.

Luckily, you can disable your Venmo credit or debit card. If you find it, you can re-enable the card so that you don’t have to request a new one and change the number with all of your billing services.

Do You Know How to Get a Venmo Card?

If you don’t want to rely on your debit or credit card, consider how to get a Venmo Master card. Venmo cards work like traditional debit and credit cards, but they use your Venmo balance first.

You can pull money from a bank account if your Venmo account can’t cover a purchase. Be sure to consider how to get a card through the Venmo app so that you can enjoy the benefits.
