How to Ride an Electric Bike: A Guide for Beginners

How to Ride an Electric Bike

Before-Ride Checks

Before you hit the road, you need to check your bike, just like you would with your vehicle. Here’s a brief list of what you need to do:

  • Check the battery charge (it’s preferable to have it fully charged, in case of emergencies)
  • Check the tire pressure
  • Bring a full water bottle
  • Fit your helmet
  • Pack an air pump and repair kit

Switch Your Electric Bike On

Go to your battery and find a switch. You will need to press it before setting it off since it’ll connect to the controller, which will display your battery life.

You should then put your bike on a setting that’ll give you some electric assistance so you won’t have to fully pedal.

Every bike will be different, but in general, there should be settings like off, Eco, Turbo, and Speed. Read up on these settings before you ride so you know which ones are preferable.

Switch Gears

During your ride, you’ll probably encounter different terrain and weather conditions. You’ll be able to switch gears, just like with a regular bike.

On the lefthand side of your handlebar, there will be mechanical gears. Try them out to see what works best for the current conditions you’re in.

Other Things You Should Know

While riding an e-bike is pretty similar to riding a normal bike, there are small differences that you might not be used to. For example, the frame’s much lighter, and the center of gravity is lower.

To make sure you stay safe, you’ll want to start out slow and figure out how the bike feels. You can gradually speed things up once you get the hang of things.

Once you’ve learned how to ride an electric bike, don’t forget about safety. You might start feeling comfortable, but accidents can happen at any time, so you need to stay vigilant.
